Creating 3D is Easy, Creating Good 3D is Hard.

Sony Pictures Imageworks has produced eight 3D films since 2003. Based on our experience in creating high-quality 3D imagery over the past 6 years, we've developed a number of tools and techniques to produce 3D content.

This presentation will cover the basic principles of Stereoscopic 3D and how good quality 3D images are created using CG techniques as well as live-action photography techniques.

Topics will include the convergence and interaxial controls used in working with 3D camera rigs (virtual and real) and the techniques used to control 3D in order to make a comfortable 3D viewing experience. The use of focal length and depth-of-field in 3D will also be discussed. The presentation will include information on working with 3D images in editing and post-production environments. Many of the principals of 3D production can be applied to recording, playback, and display technologies in broadcast as well as in consumer electronics products.

The presentation will include time for questions and answers, so please bring any questions about 3D to the lecture.
